Teachers, students, and parents can all benefit from the use of a virtual learning environment in the classroom. Assignments and information can be easily pushed to students, tests can be graded, content standards tracked and much more. Today’s student’s embrace online learning, but concerns have been raised that digital communities make security more challenging. How can we be sure that the VLE that our students trust and those using it to interact with kids aren’t putting them in danger?
We, at Lightspeed Systems, pride ourselves on helping to create safe, mobile, and collaborative classrooms, with safety as the foundation. After all, My Big Campus did originally grow out of our content filter.
One of the key ways we do this is by having no anonymity. Every user on My Big Campus is a real person in a real school. Student accounts on My Big Campus are provided only through a verified educator, school, or educational organisation. Students aren’t allowed to create their own account, which means no ghost accounts. All teachers who create free standalone accounts are authenticated. We actually call the school to verify a teacher’s employment before a My Big Campus account can be created. We know who’s on our VLE because we take the time to verify each user, first hand.
In addition, we: filter profanity; report on even private messages; save all content – even after it’s deleted; and utilise SSL/HTTPS encryption, secure authenticated logins, and secure data centre to protect data.
We pledge to:
- NOT collect online contact information without the consent of either a parent or a qualified educator or educational institution. Without prior parental consent, online information will only be used to respond directly to the child’s request and will not be used for other purposes without prior parental consent
- NOT collect personally identifiable offline contact information
- NOT distribute to third parties any personally identifiable information without prior parental consent
- NOT entice by the prospect of a special game, prize, or other activity or to divulge more information than is needed to participate in the activity
